The Toronto 2015 Games will also be Ontario’s first international multi-sport event since the British Empire Games in 1930, more than 80 years ago. With a footprint including 17 municipalities in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region, stretching from Welland to Oshawa, these Games provide a unique opportunity to engage our communities in a way we have never experienced.

In addition to the Toronto Homecoming conference, what else could we do to encourage people who have a connection to Toronto who are currently living abroad to come home?

making municipal elections more fair, relevant and participatory

Facilitator: Rob Newman, Project Lead, Better Ballots

Municipal elections in the Toronto region are not meeting voters’ expectations. On November 23rd, 2011, Better Ballots launched a new campaign called Local Choice. The province has an opportunity here to lead and to empower cities to modernise their local elections. The Local Choice campaign proposes enabling legislation to amend the Municipal Elections Act, giving more choice to Ontario’s municipalities while also laying down a set of rules and parameters to regulate any moves toward reform.
