Bridging the Gap through Social Enterprise

Concerned about the growing level of poverty in the Toronto region? Wondering what can be done to tackle the issue head-on? A number of socially minded entrepreneurs are asking the same question – and coming up with some innovative responses. The Emerging Leaders Network (ELN) and SEE Change Magazine co-hosted a panel discussion (moderated by SEE Change co-founder Elisa Birnbaum) on how social entrepreneurs are working to address challenges of income polarization in our city. Click here for a brief summary and photos by SEE Change Magazine.
This event was the third in ELN’s Bridging the growing divide in Toronto series, which seeks to raise awareness of the growing income divide and the rising concentration of poverty as well as identify opportunities for emerging leaders to take or support action. "Bridging the Gap through Social Enterprise" built on previous discussions by exploring the approach social entrepreneurs have taken to alleviate poverty in our city region.

Thursday, 28 April 2011
On Thursday, April 28, ELN brought together a diverse group of more than 30 civic leaders to explore, through dialogue, the growing gap between the rich and the poor. At the meeting participants heard about some of the programs and services that are already underway and shared perspectives on what leaders in the room could do to contribute to addressing the issue of income polarization and rising poverty. Participants emphasized the importance of considering not only how to bridge the divide but encouraged each other to consider ways to eliminate poverty.

Bridging the growing divide in Toronto
Wednesday, 09 March 2011
At the 2010 ELNstudio in December, we asked more than 200 city-builders to identify the number one issue facing the Toronto region. An overwhelming majority felt that the growing income polarization in our city is the most critical issue facing the Toronto region.
Released in December, research by University of Toronto professor J. David Hulchanski showed that Toronto is a divided city. While the trends are discouraging, Hulchanski suggests that “the segregation of the city by income is not inevitable or irreversible.”
On March 9, members of the Emerging Leaders Network will kick off a meeting to explore and discuss the issue of income polarization and how we can contribute to addressing this in our city.
Find the summary of this discussion here.
